Enrolled agent (or EAs) is a federally authorized tax practitioner empowered by the U.S Department of the Treasury. EA is a tax advisor who can represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for all tax issues. The EA credential is recognized across all 50 U.S states. Attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs) are licensed on a state basis, and are also empowered by the Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
EA status is the highest credential the IRS awards after completion of three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years. EAs, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), have unlimited practice rights.
This means they are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can represent clients before.
