Stephenson was born in Little River, Kansas in 1905.
He studied at what is now known as Pittsburg State University and then later received his masters at the University of Denver.
He then taught accounting and business law at Coffeyville and Douglas before moving to Winfield to teach at the high school in 1933.
It was during WWII that a high demand for accounting services persuaded Stephenson to start practicing in his spare time.
In 1943, he decided to step away from teaching and open up his own individual firm.
